Everything that is novel makes us initially uncomfortable. Imagine any moment of great change/shift in history and it probably frightened people. But it only takes one generation to establish the new "normal." Language is a great example: the world would benefit immensely from a common language that's easy for everyone to learn (Esperanto is the best example so far), but we're scared of "losing our culture" or giving up something. A common language would reduce translation costs, open markets, and share knowledge. The truth is that major systemic change--if well thought out--usually moves us (humanity) forward in great leaps.
We will either see these systems emerge or be forced by "benign" strongman leaders. I'd prefer emergence. I also think AI can help with all of this. The reason capitalism works for the moment is because we have no way to compare/allocate/triage value, needs, and resources against one another--too much data. A machine programmed with democratic, human values could help manage it all. It would probably work best/be most manageable at the metropolitan level. Larger regions would simply have to be digitally linked for inclusion in the management of resources.
