I’m indie writer Teague de La Plaine, author of the bestselling Sea at Sunrise and other stories. This is my weekly newsletter, where I talk about writing and self-publishing in addition to my own life. I keep the newsletter free, because I prefer you spend your money on my books.
Rave Dekko’s on his first R&R in years. No missions. No starship. No Sekora in his head.
Just him at a quiet café on a backwater colony planet, a cup of real coffee, with a fellow StarForce officer minding their own.
Then trouble walks in.
Now, Rave is caught in someone else’s crisis—with no AI to pull him out until it’s too late and no authority to call in favors. Just him, his instincts, and a new ally he barely knows.
And the colony? It’s about to go up in flames.
No gear. No plan. Just muscle memory and a habit of doing the right thing, even when it’s the wrong time.
How unlucky can one guy be?
What I Learned Writing This One
This book came out fast. I drafted it between work calls, weekend boat work, and the edges of early mornings. I wasn’t planning to write a previous character into a sequel to Advisor—but Rave wasn’t done with me.
He’s leaner this time. Harder. Still holding the line, even when no one’s asked him to.
Sekora—the AI who usually haunts his thoughts—isn’t in this one until it doesn't make a difference. It’s out of reach. That silence? It changes things. For the first time, Rave has to navigate the mess without its voice in his ear.
If you haven’t read Advisor, start there. If you already know Rave Dekko? Welcome back.

My model has been to publish my newsletter for free (and eventually getting back to podcasting as well) and simply ask subscribers to buy and read my book when I release them. This will be the first release to test the theory. I haven’t advertised at all, so any sales will likely have come from here. Let’s see what happens!
