I get the impression that many (most?) people think we derive our values wholly externally (religion, philosophy, group membership), when in fact I believe those externals are simply things we bump up against as we develop and evolve. They inform but don’t dictate. If “a man is what he thinks about all day,” then a person’s values are evident in his or her thoughts, words, and actions.
